Amy Snow Scholarship Fund Established: 12/08/1995 Established by Amy's family in their daughter's memory, this award is made to a graduating senior from Corning East High School who shares Amy's zest for life and learning, shows a strong commitment to school and community and demonstrates belief in the good of all people. |
Ann Baldwin Dedrick Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: Established by the Dedrick and Baldwin Families in memory of Ann Dedrick, a fifth grade teacher in the Horseheads School District. The award is given to a student graduating from Horsheads High School. |
Barger Crusade Family Fund Established: 12/08/1999 Established by Barger Crusade, this unrestricted fund supports programs in Chemung County. |
Bertram L. Newman Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 12/28/1999 Established by Marion Merrill and Robert Newman, the children of Mr. Newman, in memory of their father who served for many years as County Judge, Surrogate, and later Supreme Court Justice of the Sixth Judicial District of New York State. The scholarship is awarded to students with financial need graduating from a high school in Chemung County. |
Betty O'Connor Memorial Youth Bowling Scholarship Established: 09/12/1995 The Community Foundation manages this scholarship in behalf of the area's youth bowling association. |
Brooke Makowiec Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 9/15/06 In memory of Brooke Makowiec. The scholarship is awarded to a student from Addison Central School District. |
Carolyn Matthews Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 06/18/1998 This fund honors the memory of a Star-Gazette copy editor whose colleagues, friends, and family members established the fund following her death from ovarian cancer in 1994 at age 29. In addition to working while waging a courageous battle with the disease, Carolyn wrote a weekly column called "Coping With Cancer" for more than a year as a means of helping others. She also took an active part in Strides for Cancer fund-raising events. Her scholarship recognizes a recipient's positive attitudes and contributions that better the community, including schools. |
Charles and Lois Chase Family Donor Advised Fund Established: 12/28/1998 Established by Charles and Lois Chase. Taking advantage of appreciated stock opportunities, the Chases established their fund to support some of the couple's many community interests. |
Chemung Canal Trust Company Scholarship Established: 01/01/1988 Established by Chemung Canal Trust Company and awarded to a student with financial need who graduates from a high school within the service area of a branch office. |
Chemung County ARC Established: 01/01/1993 The endowment is part of a long-range plan to develop and maintain a broad financial base for the ongoing work of the agency, which serves the needs of citizens who are developmentally disabled. |
Chemung County Endowment Established: 01/01/1978 By creating unrestricted funds, donors give The Community Foundation Board of Directors the freedom to approve those grant applications that demonstrate the strongest ability to meet community needs and build on community assets. The Community Foundation's Grantmaking Committee considers applications during each funding cycle and forwards its recommendations to the board of directors. |

A well-known photographer in the community, Dan published The Chemung Valley Reporter weekly newspaper. |
Daniel Dobson Memorial Scholarship Established: 12/11/1997 Established by Cameron Fabricating Corporation named in memory of an employee, with priority given to employees of the corporation and their children attending a technical school or university with preference given but not necessary to those studying in the fields of engineering and the sciences. |

Ernie Davis Heisman Memorial Fund Established: 06/27/2006
|
Ernie Davis Scholarship Fund Established: 01/01/1988 Established by a group of Davis's teammates and friends. "Ernie has been honored because he was an outstanding person-not simply because he was a great athlete," said Marty Harrigan, a friend of Davis and his former coach. Ernie Davis graduated from Elmira Free Academy and Syracuse University, earning numerous athletic awards at all levels of play. The first black player to win the coveted Heisman Trophy, he died of leukemia in 1963 just after signing with the Cleveland Browns. The memory of this gentleman and star running back is still honored throughout the country: The Touchdown Club of America named Ernie Davis as one of the "Legends of the Game" in 1997. |
Ernie Davis Study Center Fund Established: 10/29/1997 Established by a group of Davis's former teammates and friends, this fund supports The Center, located within the library at Ernie Davis Middle School. The Center includes print, audio and video resources on its namesake's life and accomplishments. Harriet Hoffman Brand Fund Established: 1988 This fund was established to be used for programs in the Chemung County area for the well being, appreciation, understanding, care, control and treatment of domestic birds and animals and for the well being, appreciation, understanding, treatment, protection, preservation and management of wildlife and the environment. |
Harriet I. Wixon Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 01/01/1981 Established by Pat and Bud Powers in memory of one of her high school teachers, Miss Harriet Wixon. Mrs. Powers served on a scholarship committee and saw first hand the overwhelming financial need that Chemung County students have in pursuing a college education. This scholarship results from that experience. |

Harvey O. and Celia Eldridge Hutchinson Scholarship Fund Established: 01/01/1993 Celia Hutchinson, a former English teacher at Elmira Free Academy, established this fund in memory of her husband, the late Harvey O. Hutchinson, former superintendent of Elmira public schools. This fund supports post-secondary education for students graduating from a Chemung County high school. |
Helen G. Schuyler Scholarship Fund Established: 06/20/2002 The Helen G. Schuyler Scholarship is awarded to a student graduating or who has graduated from a Steuben County high school that plans to study fine or decorative art at the collegiate level. |

Human Services of Southeastern Steuben County Fund Established: 01/01/1977 Established in 1972, the fund is an outgrowth of the Tropical Storm Agnes Flood that damaged several churches in the Corning area. To finance their repairs, the churches took out a 30-year loan at 1% interest from the Small Business Administration. The Southeastern Steuben County United Way spearheaded a special appeal - The Community Services Rebuilding Fund Drive - that successfully met the obligation. Its proceeds became the Human Services Fund administered by The Community Foundation. Church and Community Foundation representatives form the advisory group that conducts the grantmaking. |
Jim Wilkinson III Caddies Care Fund Established: 2/16/2000 Established by Allison Finney, an LPGA golfer, friends and family in memory of Jim Wilkinson, her caddy. The fund is designated for Camp Star, a local camp for challenged children in Jim's memory. |

Kenneth Tifft Family Fund Established: 05/05/1998 Established by Mr. Tifft's family in recognition of his commitment to the greater Elmira area, the Tifft family directed his memorials to the unrestricted Chemung County Fund, which benefits the community as a whole. "We think he would be pleased because it goes along with the philosophy of The Community Foundation that needs of the community change over time and an unrestricted grant allows you to meet those needs as they arise," says Betsy Dalrymple. Her father and she, a member of the Elmira Junior League, were instrumental in starting The Community Foundation. |
Kenneth Tifft, Robert Jones Field Experience Fund Established: 10/19/1998 Established by an the Anderson Foundation to recognize the lifetime of Ken Tifft’s and Bob Jones’s commitment to their community. A noted attorney, Mr. Tifft championed and initiated The Community Foundation and was responsible for holding it together during its formative years. An accomplished administrator, Mr. Jones came out of retirement to serve as The Community Foundation’s first executive director. His people-centered skills and concerns set the tone and permeate The Community Foundation even today. |

Keuka Area Endowment Fund Established: 12/31/2003 The Keuka Area Fund at The Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes provides a vehicle for individuals, families, and businesses to invest in the residents of the communities surrounding Keuka Lake and to protect the physical environment of the region. |
Kurt and Ellen Wohl Scholarship Fund Established: The late Kurt Wohl and his wife Ellen - he as a business owner and she in her work with the disadvantaged - saw the need for a non-traditional student scholarship. Mr. Wohl always commented that this community was good to him and his family, and that he wanted to do something in return for his success. The result was this scholarship for Chemung County residents who are 25 years old or older and wish to further their education. |

Mandeville Fund for Chemung County Residents Established: 03/31/1997 The late David C. Mandeville and his family were quiet and highly generous community benefactors. His will established this fund to honor those family members and to assist the community that they had loved. To ensure his fund's vitality through the passage of time, he entrusted its administration to The Community Foundation. Mr. Mandeville was also a member of The Community Foundation Board of Directors and was the catalyst for The Mandeville Legacy Society, a vehicle to recognize those who plan to make a gift to The Community Foundation at the end of their lifetime. |
Mandeville Fund for the Clemens Center for the Performing Arts Established: Established by David C. Mandeville through his will for the Clemens Center, which he dearly loved and served as well-studied patron of the performing arts and president of the board of trustees. His fund recognizes his family as long-time benefactors of the community. |

Ned and Peggy Clarke Fund for Critical Care Nurses Established: 06/20/2002 Ned and Peggy Clarke have established a fund at the Community Foundation for the purpose of providing a source of funds for continuing education and stress relief to critical care nurses at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. |
Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes Designated Fund Established: 06/29/2000 Established by the orchestra as a designated fund. This will ensure the orchestra will be here today and tomorrow to perform and participate in an important part of our cultural community. |
Outstanding Educator's Award Established: 10/01/1994 Representatives from local businesses and educational institutions formed a partnership in 1994 to recognize outstanding teachers in our New York-Pennsylvania region. A board of community representatives judges the nominations and selects eight Outstanding Educators for monthly recognition. Each winner receives a $500 award, a Steuben apple, a profile in the Star-Gazette and a certificate. The winner's school receives a matching award of $500. A reception in June honoring that year's recipients draws such dignitaries as the New York State Governor and Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents. |

Saxton Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Haverling High School who plans to attend a college or university full-time in the fall. The recipient of this award must demonstrate good character, initiative and direction. Emphasis will be placed citizenship and community involvement during the selection process. |
Robert T. Jones Family Fund Established: 01/01/1993 Established as an unrestricted fund by The Community Foundation's first executive director, Mr. Jones. A well-respected community leader, he greatly believed in the concept of The Community Foundation and its ability to make the best use of unrestricted gifts. A Community Foundation committee decides where the greatest need is and funds it. He hoped that his fund would be an example for others to follow. |
Robinson/Pinckney Memorial Fund Established: 02/17/2000 Established in memory of Sylvester and Katherine Robinson, Mildred M. Pinckney and husband Edwin Pinckney. The Pinckney family was modest and lived frugally, giving a remarkable gift to the community to establish the fund. |
Rodney H. Faught Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 01/01/1990 Established by the Faught family and friends, the award is made to a graduating senior who has a physically disability. Recipients must attend high school in Chemung County and may use the award at a two- or four-year college. |

Ruth G. Murray Administrative Endowment Fund Established: 07/01/1994 Ruth Murray is a past board president and the past executive director of The Community Foundation, which she firmly believes has two responsibilities: (1) to provide for the future of our community and (2) to ensure its own future through an administrative endowment fund. It was at her request when she retired that colleagues, friends and family make founding gifts. Income from the Ruth G. Murray Fund provides organizational support for The Community Foundation. |
S. Roberts Rose Fund for Youth Established: 04/12/2000 Established as a youth endowment fund, named for S. Roberts Rose, a retired business executive. It will allow area high school students to have a voice and make awards through grantmaking. The students solicit grant proposals from community groups, nonprofit organizations, and award the grants. |

Thomas and Mary Ellen Tranter, Sr. Family Fund Established: 01/01/1993 Tom and Mary Ellen Tranter chose to start the family fund for several reasons, but principally because they wanted an organization that will be there forever. Tom chose an unrestricted fund because of his experience on the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation. "Members of the Grants Committee study each request for funds. They've proved to me that they have their fingers on the pulse of the community. Long after I'm gone, there will be new and different needs that beg for attention. I'd like to feel that I'm contributing to solutions for some of those problems," he says. |
Thomas J. Rosettie Memorial Scholarship Fund Established: 01/01/1994 A fund established as a lasting tribute to Tom and the values he held. Created by his family, friends and the Corning Kiwanis Club, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior at Corning Painted Post East High School who has earned a varsity baseball letter during their senior year. The recipient must have contributed the most to the varsity team, based upon sportsmanship, integrity and the balancing of academic achievement and athletic pursuit. |
Tuffee J. Yunis Scholarship Fund Established: 04/22/2005 The Tuffee J. Yunis Scholarship is awarded to an Elmira City or Elmira Heights Public School district graduating senior who plans to attend a two or a four-year college in the state of New York. The recipient of this award must have demonstrated a strong work ethic, community involvement, and financial need. A solid scholastic record is also required, but the recipient of this award may not necessarily possess the highest average grades or fall into the highest class percentile. Preference will be given to women and minorities. |

Whitney Family Fund Established: 01/01/1991 Established by the late Maurice and Isabelle Whitney during their lifetime, this unrestricted fund continues to be augmented by their family. "I am very grateful to this community, and to my family and friends," Mrs. Whitney, a tireless volunteer in the community, once said. Mr. Whitney received The Star-Gazette's Excalibur award for community service. The good deeds of this respected Elmira couple continue through this fund. |
William Fenn Hopkins Memorial Fund Established: January 2008 William Fenn Hopkins was an accomplished painter whose work received numerous honors & awards over his 40-yr career in the arts. His paintings grace the collections of many private & public collections. Bill for six years was an elected official representing the 1st Council District of the City of Elmira with wisdom, concern, & care. He was a family-oriented person who devoted his life to his wife & children. On January 12, 2008 Bill lost a battle against cancer. On that date Mayor John Tonello commanded that all flags be flown at half-staff for one week in his memory declaring that the City of Elmira lost a true friend. The fund has been established with donations from family, friends and colleagues, and through the sale of limited edition prints of his work. The mission of Bill's fund is to provide monetary help to professional artists facing life threatening illness, assist community organizations in providing visual arts, drama, music and related artistic endeavors. |
William M. Cooper Scholarship Established: 01/01/1993 Established by the William Cooper Foundation as an award to a high school student with financial need who is graduating from a high school within Chemung County. An 1898 graduate of Elmira Free Academy and alumnus of Williams College, Mr. Cooper held executive positions in the American Sales Book Co. (also known as Moore Business Forms) and American LaFrance-Foamite Corp., both in Elmira. |
William T. Smith II Family Fund Established: 09/27/1996 Bill and Dorothy Smith and their family established this fund by designating The Community Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy to ensure that their charitable interest would be served during their lifetimes and beyond. |
Women with Wings Field of Interest Fund Established: 08/01/1995 History was made in 1973 when a group of local women pilots won selection of the Chemung County Airport as finish line for that year's Powder Puff Derby. The cross-country race for women aviators started in California with almost 100 participants who raced their way to the Elmira-area airport and then enjoyed Derby festivities, including an awards banquet, receptions and sightseeing. As the host committee, the local women pilots had raised funds to cover various costs. The event ended with a surplus, which they invested. In 1995, administration of their fund was transferred to The Community Foundation and designated for the support of aviation science. |
Ziff Law Firm Scholarship Established: 03/09/2007 The Ziff Law Firm Scholarship is awarded to an individual who is a student in Chemung County, Corning East or West, Waverly, Sayre or Athens high schools. The recipient of this award must have overcome some adversity and prevailed through hard work and perseverance. |
