Send Us Poems that Celebrate Our Region!

Our poetry contest is now closed. Thank you to all the poets who submitted work.

The Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes will feature work by poets from our region in our 2015-2016 annual report.

We’re seeking poems that help us see the Southern Tier and Southern Finger Lakes with fresh eyes. Possible subjects could include: home, local places, community, family, the local landscape or cityscape, living or growing up here, looking back at the past or looking forward to the future. (Other subjects are also welcome!) We want work that is positive in tone and reflects a sense of affection—or even amazement.

We will choose up to 12 pieces for the annual report. The author of each of those poems will receive $100.

The Details

Who may enter

We welcome submissions from all current and former residents of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben or Yates County, N.Y. You need not be an already-published poet. Whether you’re writing your first poem ever, or you’ve been writing all your life, if you have a beautiful piece to share, we’d like to see it.

What to enter

You may submit up to three short poems (no more than 20 lines each) or three short, poetic prose pieces (no more than 200 words each). All styles are eligible—formal or free verse, rhyming or non-rhyming. The work doesn’t need to specifically mention places in our region, but it should grow out of the experience of living here. The tone should be positive. The work must be original—written by you.

Along with your entry, please provide a short statement—no more than 50 words—telling us about yourself. If you don’t currently live in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben or Yates County, mention briefly when and where you lived in the region. Please also provide your name, address, phone number and (if applicable) e-mail address.

If one of your pieces has already been published, tell us the name of the publication so we can give proper credit if we include that piece in our report.
