Scholarships for Adult/Non-traditional Students

The Community Foundation offers the following scholarships for adults seeking further education:


A Hope 4 Lyme Scholarship

Eligibility: 
The is for a non-traditional student (a student that is already in college or has taken a break from school and is going back to school).

Selection Criteria:

  • Has been diagnosed or treated for Lyme disease
  • Has been affected by Lyme thru the illness of an immediate family member
  • Is pursuing a career in the medical field
  • Is a resident of Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Bradford, Lycoming or Potter county.

Daniel A. Driscoll Scholarship

Eligibility:
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who plans to pursue a career in photography.  It can be awarded to a high school senior or a college/trade school student.

Selection Criteria:
Must be a Chemung County resident. Must be planning on studying photography in college or trade school

American Association of University Women Scholarship

Eligibility:
This scholarship is awarded to a woman who has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the areas of scholastic ability, character, and extracurricular/community involvement. 

Selection Criteria:
This award may be given to a high school senior from Corning-Painted Post, Addison, Campbell-Savona, a sophomore at Corning Community College who is planning on entering into a four-year college full-time, or an adult woman who is entering a four-year college full-time.

Donald May Vocational Scholarship

Eligibility:

This scholarship is intended to assist those looking to obtain a career in a vocational field.  Eligible students will be enrolled in a program leading to a certificate or degree in a vocational field. 

Selection Criteria:

  • Awarded to a high school seniors from EFA or Southside High School that will enroll in a vocational program in the fall of their graduating year OR
  • Students currently enrolled in an accredited vocational program, and continuing in that program in the fall OR
  • Returning students with a high school degree or GED who have been out of school and are returning to pursue a vocational education.

ethel strickarz memorial scholarship

Eligibility: 
Ethel Strickarz was a longtime associate of the Arc of Steuben. She served as Director of Development prior to her death in 2014. The education fund is a fitting tribute to her commitment to The Arc.  The scholarship fund assists adults who plan to pursue their education in the field of special education, human services, or a related clinical area such as nursing, psychology, speech pathology, or physical/occupational therapy. 

Selection criteria:

  • An adult learner who resides in Steuben County.
  • The recipient must plan to pursue their education in the field of special education, human services, or a related clinical area such as nursing, psychology, speech pathology, or physical/occupational therapy.

Award Amount: $500

La Luz Early Childhood Teacher Education Fund

Eligibility:
The La Luz Early Childhood Teacher Education Fund assists adults that want to attain an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, or to obtain a New York State Director’s Credential.

Selection Criteria:

  • The select college must grant a degree specific to Early Childhood Education
  • Financial need strongly considered

The Julie Ellison Delgrosso Scholarship

Eligibility:
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist Chemung County women business owners who want to make changes in their existing businesses and need a small financial boost to make their business dream take shape.  The scholarship is designed to address the needs or gaps that can present barriers to taking your business to the next level.  

Selection Criteria:

  • Female Chemung County resident and business owner
  • Ability to explain exactly how a scholarship will enhance your existing business and allow it to grow to the next level

Kurt and Ellen Wohl Scholarship

Eligibility:
Kurt and Ellen Wohl established this scholarhip for "non-traditional" students. This is often a student returning to school after an extended period of time.

Selection Criteria:

  • 25 years or older
  • Recently accepted at a technical school, college, university, or nursing school for a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester
  • Will attend an educational institution within 55 miles of Elmira. These include but are not limited to: Elmira College, Keuka College, Binghamton University, Corning Community College, Arnot Ogden Medical Center, and Elmira Business Institute
  • Current resident of Chemung, Steuben, or Schuyler County, 2+ years
  • Meets income requirements
  • Preference given to a student pursuing Early Childhood Education and/or certification

Southern Tier Physicians Nursing Scholarship

Eligibility:
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist worthy students in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties in their pursuit of degree as a RN, LPN or a Bachelor's degree in nursing. The awards will be a maximum of $5000 and will be determined by the amount of the tuition for one year. Awards will be made in the beginning of the second year of the program. Recipients may apply for their subsequent years; however, they will be placed in a pool of new applicants each year. Recipients are encouraged to stay and work in the local area for two years after graduation. 

Selection Criteria:

  • Have completed the first year of their program or be halfway thru an LPN program and be able to provide proof that this has occurred
  • Be a U.S. citizen currently living in Chemung, Schuyler or Steuben counties. 
  • Have a GPA of 3.2 or better
  • Explain his or her personal goals and commitment to the field of nursing through a written essay. Considerable weight will be given to the applicant's ability to convey their goals and reason for choosing this career in an organized, clear and thoughtful essay
  • Three letters of reference, two of which are from professors or other individuals who can attest to the applicant's ability and desire to succeed in this profession
  • Meets income requirements
